Review by Bert VD Abeele: Albert Bell’s Sacro Sanctus is coming out with their new album “Liber III: Codex Templarum”. This is the third instalment in the Sacro Sanctum Templar Trilogy and the Maltese multi-instrumentalist tackles it head on.
The music can be described as blackened Heavy/Doom Metal, but to my mind only one description truly fits: war metal. The album didn’t start as well as I’d have liked; the first track ‘The Widow’s Sons’ was a bit too slow and doomy for my taste. Still, the atmosphere was very good, and I ended up liking the song anyway.
After the first track the music picks up the pace, becomes more aggressive and infused with a really cool rock’n’roll vibe with good riffing, shredding solos, fittingly raw vocals and an overall great production. This record also caters to the lyrics enthusiasts out there.
If, just like me, you’re a fan of the great old ones like Venom, Motörhead and Bathory, then this album will undoubtedly be very much to your liking!
